Its 73 mile perimeter contains numerous bays, islands, weed patches and sand beaches. The mean depth of Press is 18 feet (max 72 feet) and the water is stained brown (secchi reading of nine feet). Aquatic vegetation, including grasses and wild rice, is abundant each summer in the rivers and bays. Fishing is excellent for walleye and northern pike pretty well anywhere on the lake. Smallmouth bass fishing is great in the spring and fall. Anglers favour the inlet and outlet of the English River, inlet of Wintering Creek on the east side of the lake and the Grassy River coming out of Hut Lake (a popular walleye/northern lake that is boat accessible from Press). Hughes Lake on the west end of Press is also boat accessible and is popular with many walleye and northern anglers. The lake is loaded with reefs (although it is not as great a rock hazard as many area lakes) that produce excellent summer walleye. A fifteen minute portage accesses Rush Lake, a small boat cache lake that often provides fantastic action for walleye and northern.
