Fort Frances - Gateway to Sunset Country

Fort Frances LaVerendrye ParkwayFort Frances, Ontario, the largest town in the Rainy River District with a population of 8315, is a modern, full service community. It is located on the shores of Rainy River, and along the Canada-US border making it the gateway to Northwestern Ontario. The town is linked by a bridge to International Falls, Minnesota. Fort Frances also has a fully-developed waterfront along beautiful Rainy River and the community is home to the well-known Fort Frances International Bass Classic fishing tournament. Rainy Lake extends north and east from Fort Frances and is home to many hunting and fishing resorts. Rainy Lake is famous for its smallmouth bass fishing.

History of Fort Frances

Fort Frances is the oldest settled community west of Lake Superior. A view of pioneer and aboriginal life, along with displays of local arts and crafts is provided at the Fort Frances Museum and Cultural Centre in the heart of the downtown shopping district. The Fort Frances Museum was completely renovated in 2007 and includes information on attractions and history of all of Northwestern Ontario Be sure to visit the the Fineline Art Gallery. In the evening enjoy a gourmet dinner and stop by the International Bridge to see the giant banners featuring beautiful views from across Sunset Country.

Fort Frances Sorting Gap MarinaGet some exercise by walking two miles along a waterfront development area to the rapids where Rainy Lake flows into Rainy River. The next half-mile takes you through Pither's Point Park and onto the shores of one of North America's cleanest bodies of water, sparkling Rainy Lake. Stop at Pither's Point and check out the logging boat Hallett. The 60-foot, 57-ton boat was built in 1941 and was the largest and most powerful boat on Rainy Lake until it was taken out of operation in 1974.

If the weather is agreeable, spend the day at the Kitchen Creek Golf Course located just west of the town. Before leaving Fort Frances, spend a few moments enjoying the breathtaking view from Noden Causeway, a series of island-hopping bridges just 7 kilometers out of town on Highway 11.

Fort Frances has so much to offer visitors - great shopping, fine dining, various hotels and lots of outdoor sports such as fishing, hunting in the summer and ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in the winter.
