Kenora on Beautiful Lake of the Woods

Husky the Muskie tourist attraction in Kenora

Kenora, one of central Canada's most popular vacation destinations, is a full-service community which recently amalgamated with Keewatin and Jaffray Melick to become the City of Kenora. Downtown Kenora has become a year-round outdoor art gallery with murals depicting the town's colourful history gracing the walls of several buildings. Stop at the Information Centre on the Harbourfront for a brochure that takes you on a walking tour of the Heritage Townscapes Murals. The Harbourfront and its greenbelt serve as focal point for summer festivals and concerts, and provides an interlocking brick walkway for those interested in taking a stroll along the lake. Eventually, you'll land at the tail of Kenora's best-known landmark, Husky the Muskie, a 35' high, two-ton replica of the fish Lake of the Woods is famous for. Husky the Muskie is located in McLeod Park, where you can get a good look at the Rotary Goodwill Geyser and perhaps feel some cool spray. The geyser periodically shoots a water stream 75' into the air. A tugboat once used to haul logs to the local paper mill can also be found in the park.

Other Points of Interest

At the Lake of the Woods Museum, you'll find that Kenora was built on the resource-based industries of lumbering, mining, water power, flour milling and lake transportation. The museum houses more than 15,000 artifacts. Three levels of exhibit space highlight an intriguing collection of aboriginal and pioneer artifacts, natural history, minerals, textiles, and pictorial and archival material.

For a look at something unique, check out the bottle houses made of 15,000 bottles and about 2,000 pounds of mortar in the village of Redditt, 20 minutes north of Kenora. Cruise on Lake of the Woods aboard the MS Kenora, a passenger ship. It departs from the Kenora Harbourfront daily and offers dinner and dance cruises. A point of interest will be the deep-water channel of Devil's Gap, guarded by a rock first painted in the late 1800s with the face of a devil. According to traditional aboriginal belief, there are rocks on the lake, often resembling creatures or beings, that are inhabited by spirits.

There are plenty of beaches within the city limits. Venture out onto Lake of the Woods by boat taxi or shuttle service and within minutes you'll arrive at Coney Island, popular for its wide sandy beach, boardwalk and large grass playing field. Anicinabe Park, has picnic sites, a boat launch and trailer parking, a beach, protected cook-out area and shower facilities. Garrow Park features a beach, docks, playground and tennis courts and hosts an international rowing regatta. About 20 kilometres southeast of Kenora on Highway 71, Rushing River Provincial Park features four beaches, impressive waterfalls, camping and nature trails. The park also offers many activities - you can rent canoes, kayaks, water bicycles and paddle boats. Wherever you are in Kenora, you are never too far from a beach - perfect for those hot summer days.
