CLOSE Sunset Country Morson Morson, Ontario - Island Splendor
Located about 40 miles north of the Canada-US Border, Morson, Ontario is literally "at the end of the road." But for those who enjoy outdoor recreation, it is the beginning of a unique and wonderful outdoor experience. Morson has immediate access to unspoiled tracts of wilderness in the heart of the Lake of the Woods. This is truly a first-class recreation area for anglers, boaters, and nature lovers. Those who venture here can stroll along a sandy beach on a warm summer day or challenge the rugged terrain of the islands in the brisk of autumn. The scenery is spectacular regardless of season. Quality Fishing For both quality and quantity fishing it is hard to find a better spot. Lake of the Woods supports a wide variety of species you expect on any large body of water, yet here in the center of the lake, you'll find thousands of islands with their sheltered bays offering the quietness and safety usually associated with smaller bodies of water. From Morson, Lake of the Woods is a one stop spot for walleye, bass, northern, muskie and lake trout along with crappie and perch. Wild rice bays provide feeding grounds for migratory waterfowl and duck hunting on Lake of the Woods is some of the finest anywhere. Flocks of mallards, teal, blue bills and woods ducks visit the area every year along with large populations of geese. For big game, area resorts offers hunts for deer, moose and black bear. While in the area, you'll want to see the ancient rock paintings on Painted Rock Island. Believed to be 800-900 years old, their existence is largely a mystery. Although the art is primitive, the durability of the materials used to paint it is unequaled in modern times. Tomahawk Lighthouse celebrated its 100th birthday in the Year 2000. Originally built in reponse to requests from lumber companies who found night travel on the lake nearly impossible, it operated until 1962. It was moved to the mainland the following year. In summer, it becomes a display of local artifacts and historical photots. Those adventurous enough to climb to the top will be rewarded with an incredible view of Lake of the Woods. Visitors are invited to tour the lighthouse by appointment. Morson is off the beaten track, a small community of 200 year-round residents. Over thirty modern businesses provide service to the community and its visitors. A variety of accommodations are offered at mainland and island resorts. Morson has that special combination of fine recreation, interesting sites, beautiful scenery, a fascinating natural environment and warm hospitality.
